XIV INTERNATIONAL GLUTEN WORKSHOP

It is with great pleasure that we announce the upcoming XIV INTERNATIONAL GLUTEN WORKSHOP. This scientific event will be organized between Spain and Portugal and will be held from 19th - 21st June 2023 in Madrid, Spain.

The primary objective of this meeting is to bring together researchers studying gluten. This workshop represents an invaluable opportunity to share experiences, establish links, and explore collaboration around the issues facing global wheat crops. The meeting will take an integrated approach to research by attracting specialists in diverse subjects and will directly address the distressingly common misinformation about gluten and wheat that circulates is in the media of many developed countries. We expect to present a universal vision of the importance of consumer perception of wheat products, and the effects this has on consumption in developing countries, as well as the implications for wheat research and what action should be taken.

Researchers from around the world will report on progress made in topics such as:

  • Contribution of wheat grain components to industrial (food and non-food) quality (gluten proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, bioactive components).

  • Genetics and breeding for wheat processing and nutritional quality improvement (Including use of molecular markers, omics, genomic selection, new breeding techniques).

  • Impact of GxExM Interaction on wheat end-use quality.

  • Relationship between sustainability of the wheat field chain and quality (i.e. field management, grain storage, shelf life).

  • Genetic resources for end-use and nutritional quality improvement.

  • Nutritional quality, health benefits of wheat.

  • Progress in milling and processing technologies.

  • Innovations on the analysis of wheat quality parameters: technologies and methodologies.

We cordially encourage you to attend and contribute to one of the major events of 2023 in the gluten field. Demand for wheat in the developing world is projected to increase 60% by 2050.

Understanding and properly decoding the multiple roles governing wheat production, transformation, and use will continue to be incredibly important in shaping people's diets around the world. The research community is fully engaged as demonstrated by the increasing number of manuscripts devoted to the subject. We hope to establish a friendly and open academic environment for all of us working in or interested in moving into this area of research. aim is for you to communicate your latest results in gluten research to the best researchers in this area of knowledge.

A multi-species, low cost, genome wide genotyping platform to support molecular breeding in small grains

Thu, Dec 15, 2022 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM CET

Presenter: Jason Fiedler, Research Geneticist, USDA Agricultural Research Service, USA Outline: Molecular breeding applies genetic information to predict performance and is a powerful tool for the rapid development of new and improved small grain germplasm. For efficient deployment, a durable, robust, high-throughput genotyping platform – with a short turnaround time and low cost – is required to inform selections within breeding programs. To meet these needs, we have developed a new multi-species platform based on the Illumina Infinium II array technology that targets approximately 3,000 SNPs in wheat, oat and barley each. These markers are evenly spaced along each genome, have a high information content, and include many known-informative markers already used for selection in breeding programs. Validation of this platform with ~10,000 previously genotyped wheat oat and barley lines highlighted very good technical performance and high concordance with most currently used platforms. At least 2,000 markers were informative within a given breeding program which is sufficient for the development of highly accurate genome prediction models. The platform is highly robust, requiring only 200 ng of DNA, with a short three-day turnaround time for usable data. The cereal grain content was added to a new 3,000 SNP Soy array and has been released as the USDA-SoyWheOatBar-3K, which is currently available for the public. This multi-species format also enables dual hybridization to decrease the per-sample cost. Line concordance between dual and single mode is over 95% for all SNPs and increases to over 98% with a subset of high-performing SNPs. This new platform will allow more breeding programs to use molecular tools in their pipeline and accelerate the release of varieties that can overcome the recurrent and emerging threats to our agricultural producers.

International Plant Phenotyping Symposium

The International Plant Phenotyping Syposium has been postponed to 2022

After careful deliberation and consideration of the global status of the SARS-CoV2 pandemic, the IPPN Executive Board has taken the decision to postpone its 7th International Plant Phenotyping Symposium (IPPS7) to 2022.

The Conference, co-organized in collaboration with Wagningen University, had been initially planned to take place in Wageningen, in October 2021.

„Since we cannot predict the course of the pandemic and the progress of vaccinations globally, especially with respect to international travel, the IPPN Board together with the local organizing team have jointly decided to postpone IPPS7 to 2022.“

We still follow the plan to combine the IPPS7 with the inauguration of the Netherlands Plant Eco-Phenotyping Center in Wageningen! Both events would provide visitors an excellent showcase of the most advanced methods, technologies, and applications in plant phenotyping worldwide.

Webinar: PANOMICS meets Germplasm – understanding and exploiting intraspecific crop plant variation

Wolfram Weckwerth, University of Vienna, Austria

Outline

Genotyping-by-sequencing has enabled approaches for genomic selection to improve yield, stress resistance and nutritional value. More and more resource studies are emerging providing 1000 and more genotypes and millions of SNPs for one species covering a hitherto inaccessible intraspecific genetic variation. The larger the databases are growing, the better statistical approaches for genomic selection will be available. However, there are clear limitations on the statistical but also on the biological part. Intraspecific genetic variation is able to explain a high proportion of the phenotypes, but a large part of phenotypic plasticity also stems from environmentally driven transcriptional, post-transcriptional, translational, post-translational, epigenetic and metabolic regulation. Moreover, regulation of the same gene can have different phenotypic outputs in different environments.

Consequently, to explain and understand environment-dependent phenotypic plasticity based on the available genotype variation we have to integrate the analysis of further molecular levels reflecting the complete information flow from the gene to metabolism to phenotype which we call a PANOMICS platform integrating genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and phenotyping.

Recently, I coined the term of “Green Systems Biology”, the need to apply these systems biology technologies to environmental research, ecosystem analysis and biotechnology. In the framework of Green Systems Biology we propose three fundamental pillars for future breeding strategies:

  • (i) combining genome selection with environment-dependent PANOMICS analysis and deep learning to improve prediction accuracy for marker-dependent trait performance;

  • (ii) PANOMICS resolution at subtissue, cellular and subcellular level provides information about fundamental functions of selected markers;

  • (iii) combining PANOMICS with genome editing and speed breeding tools.

Applications will be presented for metabolomics and proteomics tissue – and cell-specific analysis of the grain filling process in wheat seeds at different developmental stages.
